An Earth-like uninhabited planet in the Omicron Delta region seems the ideal location for rest and relaxation for the tired crew of the Enterprise. However, strange things soon begin to happen to the landing party. McCoy sees Alice and a white rabbit, Sulu finds an antique Police Special gun, Yeoman Barrels is accosted by Don Juan, and Esteban Rodriguez and Angela see birds. No one believes McCoy's Alice sighting until Kirk beams down and spots a giant rabbit track. Kirk cancels shore leave for the rest of the crew, but is then confronted with practical joker Finigan from Starfleet Academy on the one hand and his former girlfriend Ruth on the other. Meanwhile, Sulu has been attacked by a Samurai, Rodriguez and Angela have been confronted by a tiger, and Bones is making moves on Barrels, who has found princess's clothes.

Spock meanwhile reports from the Enterprise that he has detected a sophisticated power field on the planet which is draining the Enterprise's energy. Spock beams down to help investigate just as communications with the ship are becoming impossible. Pleasure over seeing Barrels dressed as a princess soon turns to terror when Bones is lanced by a knight. After bones is skewered, Kirk shoots the knight with the gun he has confiscated from Sulu. Investigation of the knight shows him to have the same cellular structure as the plants on the planet, and Spock surmises that it has been "manufactured." A Japanese Zero airplane then strafes Angela, fortunately missing. During the commotion, the bodies of the dead knight and McCoy myseriously disappear.

After asking Kirk what he was thinking about prior to encountering Finigan, Spock realizes that the apparitions are being created out of the minds of the landing party. Upon thinking about the Academy again, Kirk conjures up Finigan and heads off on a wild chase after him. After Kirk catches up, Finigan lays him out flat. After more fighting, Kirk finally succeeds in doing something he had never done before, defeating Finney.

Suddenly, the planet's "caretaker" appears with a "repaired" McCoy (on the arms of two cabaret girls from Rigel 2). The caretaker apologizes for the misunderstandings and offers the services of the "amusement park" planet to the Enterprise's weary crew. Kirk accepts and authorizes the crew to beam down, but Spock has had his fill of shore leave and requests to be returned to the Enterprise.

On my planet,
"to rest" is to rest,
to cease using energy.
To me it is quite illogical
to run up and down on green grass using energy
instead of saving it.

and all us scouts careless and beauty-intoxicated,

On this supposedly uninhabited planet,
I just saw a large rabbit
pull a gold watch from his vest and claim that he was late.
That's pretty good. I got one for you.
The rabbit was followed by a little blond girl, right?
As a matter of fact, yes,
and they disappeared through a hole in a hedge.

That's a McCoy pill
with a little... mystery sugar coating.
He wants to get me down there. Afraid I won't swallow it.

Something I did come to discuss.

I picked this up from Dr. McCoy's log.

who's showing signs of stress and fatigue--

yet he refuses to take rest and rehabilitation.

When Spock beams down, Sulu says, "Someone beaming down from the bridge." In the original series they couldn't beam people off the ship from anywhere except the transporter room.
  
They never bother to try and send a shuttlecraft down to rescue the landing party, or even mention the possibility.
  
Although everybody always talks about a single Japanese fighter attacking them, in one shot there are two.

Theodore Sturgeon's original script was deemed by NBC to be too imaginative and therefore too expensive. Gene Roddenberry had to do a speedy rewrite which meant that the cast frequently had little time to learn their new lines and would have to adlib.

This is the only episode in which the U.S.S. Enterprise is seen orbiting a planet from right to left. The shot was deliberately reversed in post-production because the shape of the Eastern United States and the Caribbean sea could clearly be seen on the globe used as a model for the planet.

The first hallucination seen in the episode is Dr. McCoy's vision of the giant white rabbit. Six years later, DeForest Kelley would make his final non-"Star Trek" film, Night of the Lepus (1972), a movie about giant killer rabbits.

The episode was being rewritten as it was being shot. Cast members recalled Gene Roddenberry sitting under a tree, frantically reworking the script to keep it both under budget and within the realms of believability. As a result the filming went over schedule and took seven days instead of the usual six.

It is widely believed that actress Barbara Baldavin is playing Angela Martine, her role in the earlier episode, Star Trek: Balance of Terror (1966). While her character is generally identified by only that same first name, even in the end credits' cast list, at one point Kirk addresses her as "Teller". This bit is among the material deleted from general syndication prints to clear time for additional commercial sales, allowing the assumption that Baldavin is again playing Martine to be made and accepted.

Theodore Sturgeon, commented about the instalment, "That was a gas because anything could happen. Any wild idea you could possibly have could be stuck into that script. Everybody had a good time with that one." Sturgeon submitted a story outline for a sequel to this episode, "Shore Leave II", in April 1968 but it was not produced. It is unknown whether any of the concepts from that outline were later worked into Star Trek: The Animated Series: Once Upon a Planet (1973).

This was composer Gerald Fried's first Star Trek assignment. A great deal of new music was written for this episode, including the jig that plays whenever Finnegan appears. The flute and string piece that is played when Kirk meets Ruth is heard again in Star Trek: This Side of Paradise (1967), and a slightly different orchestration crops up in Star Trek: The Apple (1967). A snatch of Finnegan's jig can be heard in Star Trek: The City on the Edge of Forever (1967) after Kirk and Spock escape from the policeman. The theme can also be heard in Star Trek: Wolf in the Fold (1967).

The original script featured Yeoman Rand as part of the landing party, but as the character was written out of the series, she was changed to Yeoman Tonia Barrows. Also, in Sturgeon's original script, the Yeoman had a share of close scenes with Kirk. In the rewrites, Gene L. Coon and Gene Roddenberry changed these to feature Doctor McCoy instead and introduced Kirk's old Academy flame Ruth to the story.

This episode is not the source for one of the more famous statements of the era, known as "Sturgeon's Law." It is documented in the Wikipedia entry for "Sturgeon's Law" that the author formulated that maxim as far back as 1951.

The preview of this episode shows Yeoman Barrows being accosted by Don Juan while wearing her princess costume. This scene was not used in the final cut.

Gerald Fried based the Finnegan theme on the Irish jig heard during the climatic fight scene between John Wayne and Victor McLaglen in The Quiet Man (1952).

The "wind chime" planet sound effect heard here is unique to this episode.

According to Herbert F. Solow and Robert H. Justman's book Inside Star Trek: The Real Story, director Robert Sparr did an excellent job on this episode, and successfully managed to direct it simultaneously with the shooting script being written. However, the cast disliked working with him, which resulted in this episode being his only Trek assignment. According to Justman, the challenging task of directing the complicated episode literally hours after the script arrived, made Sparr not concentrating enough on the actors, hurting their egos. Justman tried to bring Sparr back to the series in the second season, but it didn't come to fruition.

Except for Star Trek: The Menagerie: Part I (1966) and Star Trek: The Menagerie: Part II (1966), the re-orchestrated theme music for the opening credits begins with this episode and remains for the rest of the season.

Paint was applied to some of the rocks and trees, which have been doctored with streaks of red spray paint, presumably to make them look more exotic. This technique can also be seen in Star Trek: A Private Little War (1968).

Most of this show was filmed near Los Angeles at Vasquez Rocks and Ralph Helfer's Africa, U.S.A. Ranch.

The World War II fighter plane sequence is depicted by recycled footage of several different plane types. When it is first seen in the distance it appears to be a USMC Corsair with its gull wing configuration and markings. When the plane comes in closer for a ground attack it appears to be the front of a P-47 Thunderbolt. A second plane flying in formation can be seen in that shot. Finally, for the closeups of cockpit and wing section, it appears to be an F6 Hellcat cockpit with Imperial Japanese aircraft markings.

William Blackburn (a professional ice skater in real life), who played the White Rabbit, got the costume from Ice Capades for free. The claustrophobic Blackburn had a really painful time wearing it, especially as costume designer William Ware Theiss had originally sewn the Rabbit head to the suit. After nearly suffocating, Blackburn tore off the head, for which Theiss became very mad at him. Finally, they negotiated and Theiss put the head back with Velcro. Afterwards, Blackburn had no problem with the costume. He also commented that wearing the Gorn head in "Arena" was "even worse."

The two Starfleet cadet uniforms made for Bruce Mars and his stunt double, Vince Deadrick were later reused on background extras in Star Trek: Wolf in the Fold (1967) and Star Trek: The Trouble with Tribbles (1967).

Although Kirk appears to address the "Angela" character as "Teller" early in the episode, she is played by Barbara Baldavin, who played Angela "Martine" in Star Trek: Balance of Terror (1966) (her fiancé, Robert Tomlinson, died in the episode). The script name for her character was "Mary Teller" and was changed to Angela Martine on the set when somebody noticed that she had already appeared as a named character. In the closing credits, she is identified as "Angela".
